The Best and The Worst Destination

Chapter 1

Ten. Nine. Eight. Seven. Six. Five. Four. Three. Two. One. The countdown ended. "BOOMMMMMMM…" the rocket roar over the city of Cape Canaveral, going up to the sky where no one can see, the smoke and fume cover over the atmospheres. And now, I am floating above everyone, I looked down towards my hometown, where I was raised. Today, the day that I never thought about, the day that I will always remember, the day that will become one of the world’s pivotal histories. 16th July 1969. As a son of President John F. Kenned, I tell myself, "I will bring back the aura trophies”.

The red, hot, ferocious tail appears for the second time after orbiting our planet for 2hours and 44mins. The burn lasts for 5mins and 48second moving toward the lunar's orbit. The first color TV transmission was made inside the command module, I tried to smile, although I am feeling weak because I can't really adapt to the atmosphere in the spacecraft yet. After a while, the 3-second burn was made from the Earth's orbit – translunar injection.

Chapter 2

In the middle of the space, the service module turns 180 degrees into the lunar module, the service module must dock with the Lunar module and pull it out. After turning the service module by 180 degrees, three commanders are still together: Commander Neil Armstrong, Command Module Pilot Michael Collins, and of course, me.

“We are coming through the Lunar Orbit Insertion”, I said, passing through the second TV transmission.

Suddenly an anomalous situation happens to us. While everything seems to be perfectly fine, something happens to the communication control. The crack sound begins to interrupt the communication between us and the mission control in the US, the stumble and satirical sound of something break through the communication tools.

“We lose the signal”, I said while facing the others two astronauts.

“Hey, can you hear me!” said Charles Duke, who is staying in the mission control in the US.

“Hey! Hey! Hey!!!” I respond, but he didn’t hear it.

“It..Will..Be..Fine..Just..Come..To..The…Other..Side..And..The…Signal…Will..Come..Back…Again”, said Charles Duke with a crack sound coming through.

Going around the others side, the signal comes back again.

“Hey! Hey! Can you hear me now?!” said the guy in the mission control.

I respond to him, ‘Yes sir!’.

We are preparing to go downwards to the Moon’s surface.

“We are ready!” My partner and I spoke.

We get into the lunar module and get ready to land on the Moon, Collins stays behind and continues to orbit the Moon simultaneously.

The Lunar module extends it’s legs. After we checked everything, the Lunar module separated from the command module and service module. The LM needs to get to a safe distance before firing the descent engine. The engine fires up for 30 seconds – making the lunar module closer to the surface. In the LM, two astronauts were having a conversation.

“How would you feel if you are the first person to step on the Moon?” I asked my partner.

“Yeah, I would be very proud of myself, and I promise to keep that moment inside my heart”, he answered.

“How would you feel then?” He asked me. “I would be very relief because...”, I got interrupted by something.

“Beep. Beep. Beep. Beep. Beep.”, the sound of the alarm of the fuel - louder and louder. The red color appears around the corner inside the LM. I looked at the fuel screen. I was shocked.

“Oh No no no no no no no, we only have 5% fuel left!” I begin to stampede; I start to lose control of the LM. My hands begin to shake and suddenly rotates the controller to the right.

“Hey!!!!, calm down Buzz, Focus!!” My partner warned me.

“I..I..I am so sorry, I just.. I just can’t control my hand”, I replied.

“Hey, Buzz, calm down, everything will be alright, we can handle this”, said Neil.

“Okay, I’ll try”, I replied.

I try to calm myself and carefully manipulate my controller so that nothing goes wrong again. I slowly lower the level of the spacecraft, going down to 50 thousand feet above the surface.

“50 thousand feet”, I said.

“Fire up!” My partner said.

“60 seconds”, said Mr. Charles Duke, the capsule communicator

“Forward, forward!” I shout.

“Thirty seconds”, announced Capcom.

“Drift right”, I said.

Less than 20 seconds left. ‘Contact light!’ I said confidently. The spacecraft touched the surface safely. At that moment, the thing that I have been worried about for a long time has gone by now, I feel so relieved after getting that off my chest.

Now, it's time to step down the ladder and to get our golden trophies - the moment that everyone is watching through the TV transmission. "That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind", Neil said. With the sound of the ladder pinned on the surface, I was watching him stepping gently on the cover: the dust starts to flow around his feet, the soil starts to dip toward the opposite side, the footprints gradually appear from the ground.

Then, I followed him, my footprints moderately appear as I walk through the surface, holding a light, smooth and thin flag. Until we found a suitable spot, the victory is in the US' hands. The flag was pinned as a symbol of a 'real victory’. As I pin the flag, a small hole begins to emerge. I heard the sound of rotating the flag to fit into the hole. Neil contentedly did the Kangaroo jumps like a kid. Even though the helmet is covering his face, I know that inside he is smiling complacently.

Chapter 3

While we are celebrating our success through the transmission, something appears in the atmosphere; the white, silver, metal robot subtly flies across the space as fast as a cheetah.

“What was that?” I asked.

“Did you saw that too?” He asked

“Yep, but what was it?” I replied.

“It was like a submarine with water tanks, but instead of having the water tanks, it has the engine power”, My partner said.

“It’s had some kind of Ascent and Descent stage too”, I added.

“It also has legs for landing”, He added more.

The spacecraft called Luna 15; was a robotic space mission of the Soviet Luna programme.

“Hey!” I said while running towards that mysterious transportation.

“Why are you following it?” Neil asked loudly.

“Don’t you wonder what it is?” I replied.

Neil followed me, running towards the robot. The robot immediately picked up the Lunar’s material and flew up above my head. It shines up the bright radiance against our eyes.

I squeeze my eyes, almost shut against the bright light. I suddenly remember what Mr. Charles Duke told me…

“There will be a spaceship from the Soviet completing this mission too”, said the capsule communicator.

“What should I do if it come sir?” I asked.

“You don’t need to do anything; that spacecraft is not to return back to Earth”, he answered.

“How can you know that?” I asked him again with a curious tone.

“Because Soviet won’t let any astronauts risk their life for completing the mission, so it will be the robot and it doesn’t have the ability to control the spaceship. And at last, it would explode even before returning back to Earth” He replied to me.

I open my eyes again, it was gone. I looked around. Right. Left. Down. Up. It was outside the Lunar’s orbit – quite far away. When I look at it, it was above our heads, but far away, the robot starts to shake, the flame begins to burn the spacecraft. Shockingly, it explodes in front of my eyes—the scarp of the explosion flow around that area in the space.

I immediately remind Neil about the conversation between Mr. Charles Duke and me so that he won’t be confused about what just happened.

Chapter 4

We begin to adapt to this environment now, however, we have a limited time for this, but we still need to complete the additional mission. We take the first step of scouring on the Lunar’s surface by collecting some samples of lunar materials. I pick up a rock and look it closely, the stones are primarily grayish. I found out that many rocks are quite similar to the rocks on the Earth. I decided to step forward to the next mission to measure and sample the solar wind outside the Earth’s magnetosphere. While I am experimenting, Neil takes a picture of the Lunar’s surface. Another experiment that we did was a Laser-Ranging Reflector, the purpose of this experiment is to learn the distance between the Earth and Moon, whether the continents move over the years or not, and how fast the Moon is moving away from Earth.

“We finish our mission, and now it’s time to head home”, I said proudly.

“You can go first, I want to explore a little bit more”, My partner replied.

“But..we have a limit of the time, we need to go now”, I responded.

“I know but this is the first time, I want to explore more”, He said.

“huhhh, fine, but don’t go over 1 hour; it’s dangerous”, I sighed.

I went back to the Eagle and took a rest there. Forty-one minutes later, Neil followed back to the Eagle.

So now, we are fully ready to return to our home.

‘Split Up’, I said.

‘Split Up. Done, the descent stage is on the surface’, My partner replied.

There are two parts of the Lunar Module. The Descent stage let us land on the surface safely, and now we don’t need it anymore, so we left behind on the Moon’s surface. The Ascent stage, the primary purpose of this stage is to gets two astronauts safely return into orbit.

‘Fire Up’, I shout.

‘Fire Up Ascent stage, done’, he shouts back.

While Collins is still orbiting the Moon, the Ascent stage fire up; gets us back into the Lunar Orbit. Several short engine burns happen over the next few hours. This takes almost two orbits before Docking can happen. As we use the engine burn, the distance between the Eagle and the CSM becomes shorter.

“First Engine Burn, Fire Up!”, I Call.

After a while, I called up for the second burn.

“Second Engine Burn, Fire Up!”, I continued.

Almost finished the second orbits, I called up for the last shot again.

“Third Engine Burn, Fire Up!”, I shout.

After the LM and CSM are docked, Neil and I quickly move to the CSM or the Columbia, carrying Lunar’s materials. When I first saw Collins, the lamentable feeling appears in my heart because he did not step on the Moon, but we did. This seems like we are selfish. He needs to orbit around the Moon so that we can go back into the Lunar Orbit. So, I start the conversation.

“Hey, Collin, you know what, I am very sorry for you”, I said with a guilty tone.

“It’s fine, my job is to control the Columbia until you guys are up again. Don’t worry about that. The victory is in our hand now!” He said it proudly.

“Wooo.Yayyyy!!!!” We shout.

“High five!” We gave each other a high five for completing the mission.

And now, it’s time to say goodbye to the LM Ascent stage.

“Split!”, Collin said.

“Split complete!”, I shout.

The Ascent stage was either left floating in the lunar Orbit or smashed into the Lunar surface.

And now, it’s time to bring back our trophies.

On the far side of the Moon, the Service Module Engine fires up – Trans-Earth Injection. Three days to the destination. We stay in the command module. I went to see one of the windows in this spacecraft. Something. There was something coming closer and closer. As it moves forward, it becomes bigger and bigger. The picture begins to be clearer and clearer. There was something stuck on its tail – the red fire mixing with the smoke. It was…

“Buzz! Buzz! Buzz! Can you hear me?!” Neil shouts.

“Oh, wait, did you just call me? I didn’t hear that”, I replied.

“What do you mean you didn’t hear? I called you like 10 times already!” He shouts again.

“I…I am sorry.. I was looking at the window and I saw something too; it was like a meteorite!” I spoke.

“There was no meteorite, Focus!” He warned me.

‘Really? But I saw it, or was it was just a delusion?’ I thought.

Suddenly, A huge rock comes towards our spaceship. I noticed now. I did not have a delusion. It was real. It was the meteorite.

“Neil!!!! There is a…OUCH”, I scream.

BOOM! BANG! OUCH! BOOM! BOOM!

All of us were on the floor: I was sitting in one of the corners of this spacecraft, feeling so dizzy, recalling what happened to us. Collin was lying on the floor in the middle, having a headache, touching his head. Neil was sitting in the opposite corner, looking around, recalling his memories back.

“OUCH! What just happen?”, Collin asked while touching his head.

“I was not having a delusion! It was real! It was a meteorite!” I answered.

“Hey!! Can you guys hear me?! What happened?!” said Mr. Charles Duke.

“We’re fine sir! It was a meteorite smashing our spacecraft”, answered Neil.

“What?! How many percentages of fuel are left?” the capsule communicator asked.

I quickly ran to check the fuel. There was only 3% left. I was startled.

“There is only 3% left!” I answered.

“You guys need to focus now! We only have 3% left! This is risky! Pay attention!” Mr. Charles Duke shouts.

“Yes sir!” all of us answered.

After a while, we were back in the Earth’s orbit. The service module is no need now. We started with an enormous rocket, and now we were left with only the command module that returns to Earth.

“Operating to let go of the service module!” Collin said.

“Going back through the Earth’s atmosphere!” He shouts.

At the bottom side of the command module is the heat shield. This section of the journey was like the climax. Success or failure depends on this stage. Re-entering back to the Earth’s atmosphere is very dangerous because of the heat that is produced. The more we go near Earth’s surface, the hotter it is. As we go through the atmosphere, I felt like the steam was coming out from my body; it was scorching. Even though we have a heat shield, I was a fire, burning everything inside the spacecraft. The heat shield protects the command module for several minutes as it passes through the atmosphere.

At last, we passed through it.

“Passed the atmosphere!” Collin said.

“Going Down!” Collin announced.

“2 miles above the surface!” Collin shouted.

Once we get about 2 miles above the surface, it’s time for the parachutes. I remember that before we launched the rocket, I’ve checked the parachutes to ensure that nothing will go wrong. I am sure nothing unexpected is going to happen anymore.

“Parachutes Ready!” I spoke confidently.

“Open up the parachutes Now!” Neil calls out.

I went to the parachutes button. I push that red button. I was sure that the parachutes would work. But it doesn’t. I pushed that button again and again. It’s still doesn’t work.

“I said open up the parachutes NOW!” Neil repeated.

“I…I tried it! But it doesn’t work! I already checked it before we launched! I don’t know why it is not working! I shout.

“What do you mean it doesn’t work?! He asked.

He runs towards the button to check out. He pushed that button. The first time, nothing happens. The second time, nothing happens. The third time, nothing happens.

“What happened!! Why is it not working?!!!” He smashed the button hardly. Nothing happens.

“Hey! Don’t do that! Smashing the button is not going to help! It could cause danger to us!” I shout.

“Mr. Charles Duke! What happened! Can you hear me!” Neil asked.

“HAHAHAHAHAHAH!!!!! HAHAHAHAHAHAH!! HAHAHAHAH!!He laughed.

“The reason that it doesn’t work because I took out your parachutes even before you launched!! HAHAHAHAH!!!!”, He answered in a satisfying tone.

“Why did you do that?!!” I asked with my tears coming out.

“I already checked the parachutes, and it was there!!!” I shouted.

“Such an innocent boy. You don’t need to know why. Just enjoy this moment, the last moment of your life. HAHAHAHAHA!”, He said and hang up the call.

We were shocked. I never thought that he would do that. There is no way we are going to be safe without having parachutes. We are hopeless, the module did not stop, it moves towards the ocean beneath us. The parachutes are not working. I asked myself, “Why I am so careless, I did not check for the second time, or else we won’t be in danger. The pressure of the spacecraft smashing through the atmosphere is too much. Even if it smashes down into the ocean, we will still die. I chose to protect my body as much as I could: I squat down on the floor, bend my knees, cover my head with both of my arms, and tucking my chin in.

Boom! Bang! The sound of the module smashing hardly down into the ocean.

I feel the touch of the water, it’s coming in. My head is hurt. I can’t breathe. The bubbles were coming out from my nose. Falling deeper and deeper without the destination.

“We are now at the crime scene, here is the place where three of the astronauts fell down from the sky”, one of the journalists said.

“Unfortunately, the Lunar’s materials that they brought are disappear. The module fell deep down into the ocean with the materials inside.”, She continued.

We were stuck inside the module. I slowly turned around to see both of my partners. They were not breathing anymore. I gradually close my eyes. Talking to myself, “Sorry Dad”.

“How did they fell down sir?” She asked Mr. Charles Duke.

“There was an issue with the parachutes, the parachutes did not work properly”, he answered in a guilty tone.

“Do you know why sir?” She asked.

“It’s because of the system; it’s did not work properly”, He answered.

“How about the astronauts?” She continued to ask.

“We don’t know anything. If they are lucky, they would be safe. But… if they are not, I’m very sorry for them. They are like heroes, sacrificing themselves for US victory”, He said in a regret tone.

“How about the materials? Will it be safe?” she asked in a curious tone.

“Don’t worry about that, we’ve informed the police about this, they will proceed this issue by this evening. We will find the module soon”, he said with a smirked.

Analysis:

Who is the hero of your tragedy?

The hero of my tragedy is Buzz Aldrin. Buzz Aldrin was born with a high magnitude; he was born as a child of US president, President John F. Kenned. According to my story, “As a son of President John F. Kennedy, I tell myself, ‘I will bring back the aura trophies.’ Indeed, this quote indicates that my hero of the tragedy, Buzz Aldrin, matches with a definition of a tragic hero from Aristotle’s because he was born in a high position in. Therefore, Buzz Aldrin is the main character of my story or the tragic hero of ‘The Best and The Worst Destination’ because of his position in society.

Main idea of my tragedy

The main idea and message about the life of my tragedy is that society is not beautiful like what we saw when we were young. When we were young, we were innocent, everything looks perfect, everybody is kind, but as we grow up, we start to see the dark side of other people. For example, from my story in chapter 4, “We were shocked. I never thought that he would do that”. Buzz Aldrin never thought that Charles Duke, who has been helping him to become successful in this mission, would do this to him. Charles Duke ended his life without any guilt. This clearly shows that everybody has their dark side that we could not see yet, but at last, it will show up to society.

How does my story fit Aristotle’s definition of a tragedy?

My story fits Aristotle’s definition of a tragedy because it creates pity and fear in the audience. Throughout the play, the audience can see that Buzz Aldrin was a careful person, he checked the parachutes so that everything would be fine even before they launched, but his carefulness wasn’t enough to fight with the society around him. According to the last chapter, Buzz said, “I already checked the parachutes, and it was there!!!”. Clearly, this statement shows that Buzz was very upset with himself because he thought it was his fault; he checked it, but he didn’t know that it would be gone. The audience should feel pity for him because since the beginning of the play, Buzz is a good person, and he cares about this mission very much, he did not do anything wrong, but society did this to him.

I felt a funeral in my brain by Emily Dickinson

We analyzed this poem in a perspective way, Theme, and the style of the poem called 'I felt a funeral in my brain' by Emily Dickinson. This poem is mainly focused on the stress of the speaker.

I felt a Funeral, in my Brain,

And Mourners to and fro

Kept treading - treading - till it seemed

That Sense was breaking through -

And when they all were seated,

A Service, like a Drum -

Kept beating - beating - till I thought

My mind was going numb -

And then I heard them lift a Box

And creak across my Soul

With those same Boots of Lead, again,

Then Space - began to toll,

As all the Heavens were a Bell,

And Being, but an Ear,

And I, and Silence, some strange Race,

Wrecked, solitary, here -

And then a Plank in Reason, broke,

And I dropped down, and down -

And hit a World, at every plunge,

And Finished knowing - then -

Analysis:

  • Perspective: The first step in analyzing a poem is looking at the speaker's point of view while also considering the historical period in which they lived. In the poem I felt a Funeral, in my Brain, the speaker perspective focuses on the stress that he/she needs to face in human life. On the fourth stanza, on line 3 and 4, "And I, and Silence, some strange Race / Wrecked, solitary, here –" This evidence shows that the in the speaker's mind, it's silence and blank, he/she feels like they are strange, and they are not the same as the others – like they are not a human being. In the same way, the speaker feels like he/she is isolated and lonely; he/she is alone within their mind and body – no one else could help them escape from this situation. In summary, the perspective of the speaker on the poem is that he/she feels like they are alone and strange from the others.

  • Theme: To grasp the theme of a poem, one must look closely at the literary devices used. According to the text, the literary devices being used are repetition and simile. In the second stanza, on lines 2 and 3, “A Service, like a Drum - / Kept beating – beating.” This evidence points out the theme of suffering and madness. The service implies something that is not peaceful but has an intricate mind like a drum that keeps beating and beating, emphasizing the heartbeat of being mad and anxious. Furthermore, the text also used another literary device, which is a metaphor. In the first stanza, on line 1, “I felt a Funeral, in my Brain,” This evidence points out that the speaker’s brain contains something that has died inside the speaker, which can generate the theme of mystery and despair. However, the speaker refused to give out what gets destroyed because he/she wanted to remain the mysterious inside themselves. To conclude, the speaker tried to generate the theme of madness and despair in the poem called, I felt a funeral, in my Brain”.

  • Style: Finally, one must look at the poem’s style. In this case, I felt a funeral, in my Brain, the author tried to contain this poem's mystery. In this poem, the poem has broken into five stanzas and four lines in each stanza. In the second and third stanzas, the poem mostly covers the speaker’s despair and depression. However, in the next stanza, which is the fourth stanza, the speaker speaks to the sense of isolation and confusion within his/her mind. Lastly, in the final stanza, on line 1, “And then a Plank in Reason, broke,” This evidence helps the reader to understand what happened in the first three stanzas that he/she just lost within her mind and body. In conclusion, as we can see, the author uses very complex literature to keep the poem's mystery until the last part that he/she wanted to display the meaning of the poem I felt a funeral, in my Brain.
